THE NEW PORT IN DIAFANI

from the  Diafani  A to Z list  of  the website  WELCOME TO DIAFANI  (www.diafani.com)

The new port was built and completed in 1995 and now permits large Ferry Boats from Rhodes and Piraeus to dock in Diafani.
The money to begin this port was first contributed by a very generous friend of Diafani then subsidized by the Greek State and the European Community.

In the past the big passenger ships from Piraeus or Rhodes had to anchor out at sea and the small local kaïki launch would go out to load and unload the passengers and goods while the ship and kaïki bobbed about together in the waves.
The often heavily loaded local kaïki would then bring the passengers and their luggage back through the waves to unload on the Old Port, the small stone jetty in the centre of the village seafront.

With the advent of the New Port large Ferry Boats can now dock in Diafani and passengers and vehicles can unload with reasonable ease.
The ship docks for only a few minutes so you will see a lot of running backwards and forwards and hear much shouting mixed with the excited or sad greetings and farewells.
This is one of the principal entertainment events of this otherwise relatively calm village.
